EDMONTON – Hockey makes its return to campus Friday, October 6, as the Canada West men's and women's hockey schedules were unveiled Tuesday.
Heading into the 2017-18 season with targets on their backs are the Alberta Golden Bears, who downed the Saskatchewan Huskies to claim last year's men's title, and the UBC Thunderbirds, who outlasted the Alberta Pandas for women's conference gold.
The Golden Bears open the new season with a home-and-home series against the Mount Royal Cougars October 6-7, while the T-Birds host the Manitoba Bisons in their season opening series.
Once again this season, six teams on both the men's and women's sides will be playoff bound, with the top two teams receiving byes to the conference semis. Regular season action concludes February 10th, with quarter-final action taking to the ice February 16-18, before the conference semis February 23-25, and finally the CW Finals March 2-4. All three playoff rounds feature a best-of-three format, with all games being played at the higher seed.
At the national level, the U SPORTS championships are slated for March 15-18, with the men headed back to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton for a second consecutive season, while the women's tourney travels to Western University in London, Ont., where the Pandas look to defend their national crown.
Fans can watch every CW game on the way to nationals, as this season marks another full slate of CW hockey action on Canada West TV – the conference's official streaming platform. Every men's and women's conference regular season and playoff game will be streamed in 2017-18.
A full list of package options will be available mid-August, when the conference unveils its new streaming platform, as part of the conference's rebrand.
