Spartans-Pandas Stats

EDMONTON – Trinity Western third-year defender Colleen Webber scored on a penalty kick in the 51st minute to lead the CIS #8 Spartans to a 1-0 win over the #3 Alberta Pandas Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.
The victory improves the Spartans to 3-1-0 and extends their winning streak to three matches, while the loss drops the Pandas to 4-1-0 and ends their four match winning streak.
TWU keeper Kristen Funk had a fine performance as she made nine saves to earn her second shutout victory of the season, while Alberta’s Kelti Biggs made three saves in the loss.
After a scoreless first half the lone goal came about from the hard work of TWU forward Nikki Wright. Wright who was in the penalty area getting ready to take a cross when she was taken down by the Alberta defenders to force the penalty kick. On the PK Pandas keeper Biggs guessed to her left, but Webber went low to her bottom left to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans will now get on the bus for a Sunday afternoon match with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Match time in Saskatoon is set for noon MST. While Alberta will host the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds, who tied the Huskies 0-0 today, tomorrow afternoon at noon in Edmonton.

T-Birds-Huskies Stats

SASKATOON - A slow start by both the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the UBC Thunderbirds result in a 0-0 tie on a surprisingly 30 C day in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
Saskatchewan’s scoring duo of Daniela Fuenzalida and Elizabeth Hudon had chances to attack the T-Birds net. Fuenzalida put a ball across the mouth but no one was there to kick it home, while Hudon, who leads the Canada West in scoring all-time, had three shots that UBC keeper Ali Williamson got her hands on.
One sailed by Huskies goalie Marissa Wilford in the second half, but she got lucky when Janine Frazao, reigning Canada West MVP, was called offside and the goal was disallowed. Wilford made another diving save in the 84th minute to keep the score at zero.
In the end, no one could get on the scoreboard. With the tie UBC moves to 3-0-1, while the Huskies are 3-1-1.
The Huskies face the Trinity Western University Spartans Sunday, while UBC travels to Edmonton to meet the University of Alberta Pandas. Match time is noon at Griffiths Stadium in PotastCorp Park.

Vikes-Horns Stats

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Victoria Vikes scored once in each half to down the Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 in Canada West soccer action. With the win the Vikes improve to 2-2-1, while the Horns remain winless, falling to 0-5.
With time winding down in the opening half, Horns goalkeeper Taura Willoughby collided with a defender, knocking the ball out of her hands. Maryse Reichgeld pounced on the loose ball and made no mistake, sending the Vikes to 1-0 lead at the half.
In the 65th minute, after a quality long ball down the sideline, Reichgeld found Sawicki alone on the far post to put the Vikes up 2-0.
Stepahnie Parker earned the clean sheet for the Vikes making one save, while her counterpart Taura Willoughby made five saves in a losing cause.
The Horns will host the Fraser Valley Cascades (2-2-1) on Sunday at noon to complete the weekend, while the Vikes will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos (3-1-1).

Bisons-Cougars Stats

REGINA – Regina (0-4-1) suffered two own goals during its 2-0 defeat to the Manitoba Bisons (1-4-0) on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West match at the U of R Field.
The first own goal came in the 10th minute after Manitoba was awarded a corner. After Carrie Nash’s corner kick, Meagan Cormier headed the ball over goalkeeper Michelle Anderson. Molly Glass attempted to clear it off the line, but her header found the back of the net and gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Manitoba’s second fortunate bounce came mere seconds into the second half, with Nash again at the centre of the action. The fifth-year midfielder sent in a cross from the left side intended for Jamie Lacoste which was intercepted by Regina defender Jessica Meyer, but Meyer’s clearing attempt deflected high over Anderson and found the right corner of the net to put Manitoba up two.
Chloe Werle made one save in the shutout for Manitoba (1-4-0), while Anderson had four saves for the Cougars. The Bisons had 12 shot attempts compared to 10 for Regina (0-4-1).
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at noon at the U of R Field.

Cascades-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – In their second home game of the season, the University of Calgary Dinos played to a 1-1 tie against the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
Calgary improves to 3-1-1 with the draw, while Fraser Valley sits at 2-2-1.
It was the Cascades that got on the board in the 43rd minute. A looping kick on net by Darianne Kloot left Calgary ‘keeper Kristen Barton diving to block the shot. With Barton out of position, UFV forward Danika Snook was able to grab the ball and put it to the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The second half had barely begun before Calgary knotted up the game. In the first minute following half time, the Dinos capitalized on a bang-bang play that saw Saaraa Premji set up Tessa Miller with a perfect shot inside the box to make it 1-1 game.
UFV goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni was named the Cascades’ player of the match after a sparkling seven-save performance with the Dinos peppering the UFV net with 17 shots directed toward the goal.
The Dinos return to action Sunday afternoon as they take on the University of Victoria Vikes at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch, while UFV travels south to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
