The University of Calgary Dinos improved to 6-1 on the season in a Thursday night thriller on Kenyon Court, defeating the 4-3 Mount Royal Cougars 87-83.
The Dinos badly outrebounded the Cougars by a total of 46-29 throughout the night, with three separate players bringing down six boards.
The Dinos went 50 per cent from the floor, with the Cougars keeping the game close thanks to 11 three-pointers throughout the evening.
It was Josh Ross doing most of the damage for the Cougars, knocking down 8/13 of his three points attempts en-route to a game high 34 points.
Meanwhile the Dinos won the game on the strength of 26 Thomas Cooper points, as well as clutch play from David Kapinga late in the contest.
Cooper was a force to be reckoned with in the first quarter for the Dinos. For the first few minutes Cooper commanded play, scoring eight points in the quarter.
However, after falling behind early, the Cougars finished the first quarter on an offensive run.
Josh Ross made a couple three pointers while Glen Yang made an impressive layup in the final minute of the quarter to bring the Cougars within two, down 18-16.
Early in the second quarter Yang caught a deep inbound pass and took a Lebron-esque crab step towards the hoop, making the layup. The Dinos bench rose to their feet, infuriated by the non-call, leading to a technical foul and the Cougars coming within two of the lead.
Josh Ross continued heating up from the three-point line, nailing his fourth of the game just a short time later giving the Cougars their first lead of the game, up 26-25 with just over six minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Much like the first, the Cougars' finished off the second quarter with an electrifying run, this time fueled by Tyis Yellow-Horn. Yellow-Horn hit a three pointer before a couple free throws in the last minute. On the very next possession Yellow-Horn finished the half with a beautiful turn-around jumper to give Mount Royal a 43-38 lead going into halftime.
Cooper continued his strong play into the third quarter for the Dinos, constantly getting to line.
The highly contested quarter ended with Derek Wolf knocking down a couple free throws to give the Cougars a 62-61 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter provided some nail-biting action between the two teams. The lead consistently changed as each Dinos' bucket was met with a Cougars' score on the other end. Late in the contest Josh Ross hit another one of his eight three pointers, followed by a Derek Wolf three pointer to tie the Dinos at 78 with two and a half minutes remaining.
On the other end David Kapinga answered with a three pointer of his own followed by a clutch lay-up to put the Dinos' back up five with a minute and a half remaining.
Down six, Josh Ross again solidified himself as the hot hand for the Cougars, knocking down another three pointer with thirteen seconds remaining to pull the Cougars within three.
However, Cooper would make a free throw to put the Dinos up four as they would go on to win the game 87-83.
The two teams will be in action again this Saturday at the University of Calgary. Tip-off is slated for 7 P.M.
