Puck drops on Canada West men’s hockey season October 9

Southern Alberta will serve as the start to the Alberta Golden Bears Canada West men’s hockey title defence.

Monday marked the release of the 2015-16 Canada West men’s hockey schedule, which will see the Golden Bears drop the puck on their 103rd season with a pair of games against the Lethbridge Pronghorns October 9-10.

Along with Alberta and Lethbridge, the conference’s other six teams will all be in action opening weekend, with Mount Royal visiting UBC, Calgary playing host to Saskatchewan, and Manitoba welcoming Regina.

2015-16 provides a difficult start to the season for the Bears, who captured their 15th national title last season, playing seven of their first eight games away from the friendly confines of Clare Drake Arena.

The Bears won’t faceoff in a rematch of last year’s Canada West Final until November 13-14, when they’ll take on the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series.

Both the men’s and women’s regular seasons wrap up February 12-13, when teams will have their final chance to secure one of six postseason berths.

The Canada West best-of-three quarterfinal series open February 19-21, with the winners moving on to face the regular season’s top two teams – who will once again receive first round playoff byes – in the conference semis.

It all culminates with the Canada West Finals March 4-6, and finally the University Cup in Halifax March 17-20.
