The University of Regina's women's basketball team assured itself of a top-four seed in the Canada West postseason with a 74-36 win over Thompson Rivers on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Katie Polischuk (pictured) scored a game-high 17 points for the No. 4-ranked Cougars, who improve to 16-3 with the win.
With that top-four seed now in hand, the U of R will receive a bye through the first round of the Canada West playoffs and will host a best-of-three quarterfinal series beginning Thursday, Feb. 23 against an opponent to be determined.
The Cougars led Friday's game from start to finish, opening up the contest with nine consecutive points and holding Thompson Rivers scoreless until an Emma Piggin layup over four minutes into the first. The Cougars led 23-5 after the opening period and took a 46-14 lead into halftime. TRU played the Cougars even after halftime as they outscored Regina by a 17-16 margin in the third, but the U of R defence surrendered just five points to the WolfPack in the final quarter.
Besides Polischuk's 17-point performance, the Cougars also got 10 points from Christina McCusker and eight from Avery Pearce. Kyanna Giles had a game-high eight rebounds for the U of R, helping the Cougars to a 55-34 advantage on the glass. The Cougars also shot 40% from the field compared to just 22% for Thompson Rivers.
Shenise Sigsworth led TRU (2-17) with eight points.
The two teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS. It will be the last game of the 2016-17 season for Thompson Rivers, and the final game for the Cougars until the Canada West quarterfinals start.
NOTES: Polischuk hit three triples tonight, giving her 56 for the season ... she needs just three more to tie her own University of Regina single-season record of 59 set as a third-year player during the 2014-15 campaign.
