Bisons outlast Cougars with 1-0 win in double overtime

The University of Regina women's hockey team fell 1-0 in double overtime to the Manitoba Bisons in their 2014 season opener at The Co-operators Centre on Friday.

Lauryn Keen was the game's lone goal-scorer, as her mark 33 seconds into the second overtime gave the Bisons the win. Maggie Litchfield-Medd and Michelle Pawluk assisted on the goal.

The three regulation periods were filled with strong defensive play and numerous chances for both teams.
Regina manufactured 22 shots on net through regulation and the Bisons countered with 23.

Kylie Gavelin produced a number of chance for the Cougars as she tallied five shots on net. Tori Head was also a difference maker for the home team, as she provided consistent offensive pressure and defensive effort.
Jennifer Schmidt (pictured) was strong in net for the Cougars, making 29 total saves in the game.

Bailey Braden and Nicole McGlenen exchanged opportunities in the first overtime period, but neither could beat the opposing goaltender.
Alanna Sharman had a pair of chances from the doorstep at the end of the first overtime, but Schmidt made a pair of key saves.

The second overtime was a three-on-three period, which began with a strong chance for the Cougars but a pass went off a skate. Keen collected the puck and went the other way on a partial breakaway. She fired a wrist shot high to the short side that beat Schmidt.

Rachel Dyck made 26 saves for the Bisons, who move to 1-0.

The two teams are to face off again on Saturday, with game time set for 3 p.m., at The Co-operators Centre.
