COUGARS LOSE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO UBC

Calagry – Captain Sarah Casoro scored just 11 seconds into the second overtime to lift UBC over the Cougars 3-2. Casoro was the game's first star putting up a goal and two assists.

In their third game of the year the Cougars dressed their third different goaltender when Megan Parkyn got the nod between the pipes. Parkyn had her work cut out for her as she faced 31 shots.

The game was not for the faint of heart, a rough contest that featured 11 penalties between the two teams. Unfortunately for the Cougars, UBC was able to convert on two of their power plays.

Last year's Canada West scoring leader, Tatiana Rafter opened the scoring at the 12:14 mark of the first. The Cougar's quickly answered as Rachel Piitz buried the tying goal on a dish from Sarah Weninger and Janessa Jenkins.

Nicole Saxvik scored the lone goal of the second period on a power play to give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 edge heading into the intermission. The score remained that way until late in the third period.

Just when UBC thought they had sealed the victory, rookie forward Megan Carver stepped up. With 57 seconds left in the game Carver tied it to send it to overtime.

The celebration would be short-lived. Only 11 seconds into the second overtime frame, Casoro capped her brilliant night during a goal-mouth scramble to give UBC the victory.

Mount Royal will have another shot at the Thunderbirds tomorrow afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 3pm at the Flames Community Arenas.
