Langford robs Dinos again

CALGARY- A penalty riddle game limited the University of Calgary Dinos opportunities at a comeback against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Nov. 8th as they fell 3-2 at the Father David Bauer Arena.

"We need to stay more consistent and stick to our systems. We went away from our forecheck and ended up in the penalty box," explained second-year forward Jessyka Holt.

It didn't take the Dinos long to find the back of the net. Just four minutes into the first period, Bronwyn Stevens claimed her first of the year, picking the puck up on the wall and cutting in front to beat Samantha Langford with a low backhand shot.

UBC responded three minutes later when Tatiana Rafter put a shot high blocker side past Carissa Fischer. Sarah Casorso picked up a helper on the play to help Rafter continue to lead UBC with 10 points.

The Thunderbirds claimed their first lead of the game 13 minutes into the period as Madison Patrick's slap shot from the point beat Fischer high, ending the Dinos goaltender's night.

With a cold Hayley Dowling in net for the Dinos, the Thunderbirds struck with the iron hot. Rebecca Unrau snuck a low shot in past Dowling, unseen, increasing the Thunderbirds lead to two.

Calgary battled back at the end of the first period to cut UBC's lead to 3-2. Jessyka Holt claimed her third goal of the season on Janelle Parent's rebound after a battle in front of Langford.

The Thunderbirds greatest opportunity to reaffirm their lead came midway through the second period when Devon Morrison had a breakaway – but Calgary's Dowling came up huge with the save keeping the score at 3-2.

Calgary had a great chance to tie the game at the end of the second period after they had killed off a penalty. Heather Berzins caught a pass from Parent as she came out of the box but was hauled down on the partial breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot as the buzzer rang. Langford stopped Berzins to hold onto UBC's lead heading into the third period.

Calgary ran into penalty trouble mid-way through the third period, hindering their chance at tying the game. Calgary thought they had tied the game with three minutes to play in third when Stephanie Zvonkovic took a slapshot from the point. The shot left a rebound for Holt to try and put past Langford, but the UBC netminder couldn't be solved.

"We gave them the momentum when we ran into penalty trouble, we ended the second on a good note but it's hard to find opportunities when your down a man," said Holt.

The Dinos pulled Dowling with 1:23 left on the clock for an extra attacker but still couldn't find the equalizer.

Calgary's record now falls to 4-3-3 despite outshooting UBC 32-22. UBC improves their record to 7-1-2.

The Dinos power play went 0-4 on the afternoon while UBC's was 2-7.

UBC will head home to host the University of Alberta Panda's next weekend, Nov. 14-15.

The Dinos will host the University of Manitoba Bisons next weekend, Nov. 14-15 at the Father David Bauer Arena. Action will get underway at 7 p.m on Friday evening.
