CALGARY – The Cougars came back after being down 2-0 only to lose 3-2 in double overtime to the Saskatchewan Huskies at Flames Community Arenas. Julia Flinton had two goals for the Huskies, including the overtime winner.
Reanna Arnold looked to have opened the scoring for the Cougars when she got the puck all alone in front of the net. She out-waited the Huskies goalie but just missed, wrapping it in on the far side.
With 5:40 left in the first, Julia Flinton scored the first goal for the Huskies on a scramble as the puck trickled past Jess Ross.
The Huskies scored again minutes later when they chipped the puck past the pinching Cougars defenceman. Going in two-on-one Lauren Zary knocked one past Ross on a saucer pass from Flinton.
After a fairly uneventful period, Mount Royal got on the board 15 minutes into second. Cougar's captain Tanika Dawson won the faceoff, knocking it to Sarah Weninger who scored Mount Royal's first goal of the game.
At 11:09 of the third period, the Cougars worked the puck around deep in the Huskie's zone. The puck found its way onto the stick of Jocelyn Froehlich who let a shot go that beat Hendricks over the glove hand to tie the game at two.
After regulation time the score remained 2-2 and this one was off to overtime. The first overtime solved nothing and a second was needed to decide the outcome of the game.
In the second overtime, the Cougars and Huskies went out 3-on-3. The Cougars comeback was not meant to be on this night. After working the puck around in the Cougars end, Chelsey Sundby threw a pass across the crease to Julia Flinton who ripped a shot top corner to give Saskatchewan the win 3-2.
With the loss Mount Royal falls to 1-7-2 on the season, while the Huskies improve 7-3.
Saskatchewan will head home to host the Regina Cougars next Friday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is slated for 7:00pm.
Mount Royal will get set for a home with the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night at Flames Community Arenas.
