Dinos down Pronghorns

CALGARY- The No.10 University of Calgary Dinos downed the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-0, on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos looked to refocus and regroup against the Pronghorns after coming off a two game losing streak.

"We set some goals this week, individually and as a team. We're holding each other accountable for them and looking at the rest of the season," explained third year forward Heather Berzins

Mid-way through the opening stanza Calgary was the first to get on the scoreboard. Berzins made a drop pass along the boards to Jenna Smith who picked it up, beat two Lethbridge defenders and eventually net minder Crystal Patterson, putting Calgary up 1-0.

The Dinos continued to find their scoring touch in the second period. Just over two minutes into the period Berzins picked up her own rebound in front and beat Patterson on one knee, low glove side.

"When I saw the rebound I just knew," stated Berzins. "I'm finding my confidence on the ice at a new level. It was a good point for me to get tonight."

Calgary continued to control the puck and period, midway through when Kelsie Lang feed Kate Lumley a pass up the middle of the ice. Lumley made no mistake firing a wrist shot from the top of the circle, that went bar down and in on Patterson's glove side.

The Dinos didn't stop in the second period as they continued to capitalize on all scoring opportunities in the third period.

Janelle Parent beat a Pronghorn to the corner, retrieved the puck circled behind the net and shot the puck five-hole and in, off the wrap around.

In the middle of the final stanza just as Lethbridges' penalty expired, Iya Gavrilova picked up a pass from Parent below the goal line, stepped out and tucked the puck in past the post, giving the Dinos their fifth goal of the night and her 18th on the season.

"We need to continue to play hard disciplined hockey. We're holding ourselves to the end of the season, we realize it's the final push, especially for the fifth years we have to push for them and ourselves," said Berzins.

The Dinos will head to Lethbridge tomorrow (Jan. 24th) to face off against the Pronghorns for the final time in regular season action. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
