Preseason Coaches' Poll (Women’s Hockey): Calgary narrowly edges Alberta as 2014-15 favourites

New Westminster, BC – Expectations are high in Calgary as the Dinos women's hockey team was ranked first in this season's Canada West preseason coaches' poll.  The Dinos finished last year with a 12-14-2 record and bowed out in the conference quarterfinal playoff series versus the UBC Thunderbirds, but the squad spent the summer retooling and is now expected to make a run for the Canada West crown.

Calgary garnered 50 points, including four first-place votes from the conference's other men's hockey coaches.

Coming in second is the Alberta Pandas, who will be looking to bounce back from an early postseason exit after a conference-leading regular season that saw them finish with a record of 20-5-3.  The Pandas registered 46 points and tied Calgary with four first-place votes.

The UBC Thunderbirds and the defending Canada West champion Saskatchewan Huskies both totalled 32 points for third, with the T-Birds garnering more higher-placed votes.  The Regina Cougars follow at fifth with 27 points.

Rounding out the conference are the Manitoba Bisons, Lethbridge Pronghorns and Mount Royal Cougars.

The puck drops for conference play on Friday, October 3, with four games on tap – Manitoba at Regina, Mount Royal at Calgary, Alberta at Lethbridge, and Saskatchewan at UBC.  The 2014-15 university women's hockey season culminates in Calgary for the CIS Championships on March 12-15, 2015.
