Regina Cougars forward Emma Waldenberger is the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS Female Athlete of the Week, following her seven-point weekend against the Calgary Dinos.
Waldenberger and the Cougars opened the Canada West women's hockey season in style over the weekend, earning a pair of home ice victories over the Dinos.
Friday night was a tight affair in the Queen City, as Regina earned a 4-3 double-overtime win over the hosts of this year's national tournament, with Waldenberger key in the tight victory. The Moose Jaw, SK native was involved in three of Regina's four goals on the night, picking up two goals and an assist.
Waldenberger, who posted 12 points in 28 games as a rookie last season, followed up her opening night success with an even better offensive performance Saturday night, as Regina routed the Dinos 7-0.
Over the span of just 35 seconds past the midway point of the first, Waldenberger gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead, scoring a short-handed goal at the 12:07 mark, before netting her second of the night at 12:42. Her hat trick goal came just 2:54 into the second on the power play.
The Female Athlete of the Week award for Waldenberger, who also added an assist in Saturday's contest, is the first CIS award of the season for a Canada West player.
Regina returns to the ice this weekend with a home series against the Manitoba Bisons, who opened the season with a two-game split against the Alberta Pandas last weekend.
Along with Waldenberger, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk goalkeeper Stephan Brudiu was named the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS Male Athlete of the Week.
