CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Regina Cougars, 3-0 Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
"The girls did their job today and kept the shots to the outside and took the Cougars away from the front of the net. I couldn't have asked for more from my teammates," said Dinos goaltender Hayley Dowling.
Looking for a different start to the first period in comparison to the previous night. The Dinos didn't sit back and let the play come to them as both the Cougars and Dinos battled for opportunities. Neither team could find the back of the net however.
Calgary didn't waste any time in the second period to get on the scoreboard. Fifth year forward Iya Gavrilova continued to show why she leads the conference in points, sending a strong backhand over the glove of Cougars goaltender Jane Kish just one minute into the middle stanza.
A Second effort shot from Cheyann Newman claims her second of the year, increasing the Dinos lead to 2-0 midway through the second period. Heather Berzins and Sasha Vafine pick up assists on the play.
The Cougars had several opportunities to respond getting two five-on-three chances on the power play but Hayley Dowling held strong for the Dinos between the iron.
"We couldn't afford to let up at all and had to continue to give our best effort heading into the third period," stated Dowling.
Gavrilova put away an empty netter late in the third period to take the game 3-0, helping Dowling claim her first shutout of the season.
"It felt good to come back into the season with a win like that," explained Dowling.
Calgary will host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend Jan. 15-16. Puck is set to drop on Fridays game at 7 p.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena.
