Vafina dangles the Dinos to a sweep

CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos completed the sweep against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 2-1 overtime win, Saturday evening, Jan. 16th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

"It feels good to sweep the Huskies," explained second year Russian forward Sasha Vafina.

As Calgary looked to build off of last nights (Jan. 15th) decisive 4-2 win, it didn't take them long to continue the momentum.

Mid-way through the first period Stephanie Zvonkovic claimed the Dinos first goal of the night again with a low blocker side slap shot from the point. Kelsie Lang and Sasha Vafina picked up assist on the power play goal.

Saskatchewan scrambled in the second period to attempt to tie the game up at one-a-piece but couldn't find the back of the Dinos net. The Dinos maintained pressure in the Huskies end but were stopped by Huskies goaltender Cassidy Hendricks on all chances.

The Huskies tied the game late in the third period off of a slap shot by Julia Flinton on the point. Brooklyn Haubrich was out front for Flinton's rebound to put it in and tie the game sending it to overtime.

After taking a penalty 39 seconds into overtime Sasha Vafina redeemed herself shortly after by beating Hendricks with a highlight reel goal. Stepping out from the corner and toe dragging around a Huskie, Vafina made no mistake going bar down and in.

"I called for the pass, stepped out faked the girl and shot right away. I didn't really think about it," explained Vafina on her game winning goal.

The Dinos extend their win streak to three games, the first of the season.

Saskatchewan will host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at home next weekend, Jan. 22-23rd for two games.

Calgary will be the home team for the Crowchild Classic this Thursday, Jan. 21st against the Mount Royal University Cougars. Puck is set to drop at 5 p.m.

"We hope to keep the win streak going against the Cougars this week, I'm glad we can see the progress our team has made this season," says Vafina.
