Pandas inch closer to 'bye' with shutout win

EDMONTON – Two goals from Alison Campbell propelled the University of Alberta Pandas hockey team to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Mount Royal Cougars, Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Amy Helfrich and Ashley Morin also lit the lamp for Alberta, while Lindsey Post made 10 saves for her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season, and 25th of her career. Jessica Ross made 27 saves in net for the Cougars.

The Pandas dominated their inter-provincial matchup from the first period, outshooting the Cougars 10-4, and 31-10 over 60 minutes. The first great scoring chance for the Pandas came in the opening five minutes, but Ross was able to negate the Alberta two-on-none breakaway.

Morin finally put the Pandas in front halfway through the first, cleaning up the garbage in front of the Cougar crease, and sliding the puck past a sprawling Ross.

Alberta continued to control the pace and puck in the second period, holding the Cougars off the shot clock for the entire period. Helfrich would take advantage of the massive shot difference, sliding a rebound past Ross on the powerplay, doubling the Alberta lead. Campbell would notch her first of the night just five minutes later, finding a hole in the Cougar goalie off a great one-timer in the slot.

Perhaps the only scoring chance all game for the Cougars came in the final minutes of the second period, but Janessa Jenkins' bullet sailed just wide of the Alberta net.

The third period was much of the same, with MRU finally recording a shot on goal five minutes into the third, breaking a streak of over 30 minutes. However, Campbell sealed the Alberta win halfway through the third, sliding another PP rebound goal past Ross.

With the win, the Pandas will leapfrog the Regina Cougars for the second spot in the Canada West standings, and a potential first round playoff 'bye'. MRU, meanwhile, drop into eighth in the conference standings, and three points back of the final playoff spot.

The two teams will now head to Calgary, with the Cougars hosting the Pandas in the series rematch.
