SASKATOON - Kaitlin Willoughby scored the shootout winner to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 2-1 win over the visiting University of Alberta Pandas Saturday night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.
With the win, the Huskies completed the weekend sweep over the Pandas and improve to 3-1, while the Pandas are 2-2. A night earlier, the Huskies won 2-1 in double overtime.
Willoughby, a member of the 2017 Canadian women's hockey Universiade team, crossed-up Alberta goaltender Dayna Owen deking her to the left.
Saskatchewan netminder Cassidy Hendricks made 29 stops in the 70 minutes of play – including 16 in the first period. She stopped all three Alberta shooters in the shootout.
Owen finished the game making 22 saves at the other end of the ice.
Saskatchewan's Rachel Lundberg opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 4:34 into the second period. Lundberg stole the puck at the blue line and took off on a breakaway. Her initial shot was stop by Owen, but Lundberg slid the rebound stick side into the bottom of the net.
Alberta tied the game on a two-man advantage at 6:51 in the third period. Lindsay Weech poked the puck by Hendricks on a scramble in front of the net.
The Huskies travel to meet the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, while Alberta returns home to host the UBC Thunderbirds.
