REGINA - The University of Regina women's hockey team cruised to a 4-2 win to complete the weekend sweep of the Calgary Dinos at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday night.
The line of Jaycee Magwood, Bailey Braden and Kylee Kupper combined for eight points as Magwood had two goals and an assist and Braden added a goal and two helpers. Kupper and Alexis Larson chipped in with two assists each while Kylie Gavelin also scored.
Chelsea Court and Morgan Loroff countered for the Dinos.
The Cougars' first goal came following a strong effort to control the puck by Merissa Zerr. The rookie was hauled down in the Calgary end but was still able to poke the puck back to Larson at the point. The Cougar captain stepped in and sent a low shot towards Kelsey Roberts who made the pad save, but Gavelin was right there to put the rebound in for her second of the weekend.
Magwood notched her second of the weekend on the powerplay later in the first, taking a feed from Braden and heading down the left side uncontested before flicking a quick wrist shot past Roberts. Magwood's second of the night and Canada West-leading ninth of the season came at the 4:05 mark of the second period, as Braden went down the right wing on a beautiful individual effort. Braden worked her way around a Dino defender and was able to centre the puck for Magwood who outwaited Roberts and put it home to stretch the Cougar lead to 3-0.
Calgary broke the goose egg just over a minute later, as a point shot from Megan Grenon sailed wide of the net but bounced off the boards and right on to the stick of Court. The second-year forward easily potted it from the side of the net for the powerplay marker.
Regina answered near the end of the middle frame as Braden took a backhand feed from Magwood after a faceoff scramble and walked into the slot, beating Roberts with a wrist shot to the glove side.
Calgary drew closer at the 16:45 mark of the third as Loroff hammered one from the point that beat Jane Kish upstairs. Sasha Vafina and Delaney Frey assisted on the goal, but the Dinos couldn't get anything going in the remaining 3:15.
Kish earned her sixth win of the season in net for the Cougars, stopping 17 shots. Roberts made 28 saves for the Dinos.
Regina (7-6-1-0) will be on the road to close the 2016 portion of their Canada West schedule, heading to Lethbridge to face the Pronghorns next weekend. Calgary is back at home for two games against No. 1 UBC.
