Pincott steals the show as the Cougars blank the Huskies

CALGARY – Emma Pincott made 20 saves for her first shutout of the season as the Cougars defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 at Flames Community Arenas.

The holiday break seemed to be weighing heavily on both squads in the first period. Passes were off their marks and frustration began to sink in early. Saskatchewan had an early power play opportunity when Anna Purschke was sent off for  hooking.  Mount Royal was able to  weather the storm and  started to control the puck in the Saskatchewan zone.

Mount Royal earned a power play of their own late in the second period. The Cougars worked the puck around nicely at the top of the circle and nearly scored on a high slot tip play. After a very quick first period the Cougars outshot the Huskies 7-5 but the game remained scoreless.

Gabrielle Seper broke the deadlock at the 9:31 mark of the second period. The power forward used her tall frame to get around the defender and put the puck on the net. Seper then busted through two defenders to deposit the puck under the arm of Cassidy Hendricks.

The Huskies nearly tied it up just four minutes later on the power play. After they worked the Cougars' penalty killers into the ground, they got the puck to Lauren Zary who was all alone at the side of the net. Zary looked to have the game-tying goal but Emma Pincott sprawled across the crease, just  knocking the puck away with her arm.

The Huskies dialed up the pressure in the third period, throwing everything Pincott's way. The third-year goaltender was cool under pressure, preserving her team's one-goal lead. Nearing the end of the period, the Huskies began to crash the crease but Pincott didn't waver.

Seper's goal stood up as the game winner as Mount Royal earned their sixth win of the season.

Mount Royal improves to 6-9-0-2 with the victory while Saskatchewan falls to 7-6-2-2.

The Cougars and Huskies will play the second half of their weekend series tomorrow night at Flames Community Arenas. Puck drop for tomorrow's contest is set for 6:00pm MST.
