Winnipeg, MB – On Saturday Jan. 21 coming off a win last night, the #6 University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-0, at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
With the win the Herd improves to 12-5-3-2, and the visitors drop to 3-14-1-3 in conference play.
Lauryn Keen and Venla Hovi both led their team with four and three points on the afternoon which lead them to their 5-0 victory. Sheridan Oswald, Alannah Sharman, and Erica Rieder all scored for the home side as well. Amanda Schubert was also a major factor to this afternoon's win with her second shutout of the season. Today's start was her first since Dec. 3.
"She is more than capable at this level and she has proven that," said Bison's head coach Jon Rempel on Schubert's play. "She made a couple key saves, and she did what she needed to do."
The opening period was evenly matched with both goaltenders making key saves to keep the game locked at 0-0.
The Bisons got into some penalty trouble early on in the second period with Keen taking an interference penalty at 2:16, but the Herd were able to kill it off. Manitoba were finally able to break through at 3:45 as Hovi ripped her tenth of the season over the top right shoulder of Pronghorn's goaltender Alicia Anderson; Keen and Caitlyn Fyten got assists on the play. Manitoba kept the pressure on as Jenai Buchanan made a beautiful cross-ice pass to Sheridan Oswald who made no mistake, making it 2-0 at 12:15. Manitoba then went on to score their third unanswered goal as Hovi scored her second of the night only 12 seconds into their powerplay at 14:40; Keen and Alexandra Anderson also got on the scoresheet with assists on the goal.
Manitoba came out flying in the third, making it 4-0 on a tic-tac-toe play scored by Alanna Sharman at 0:37 who had an easy tap in. Keen got her fourth point of the night with an assist on the play along with Hovi with her third. Lethbridge forward, Jordan Doram took a hooking penalty at 5:20 putting the Herd on the powerplay. The Bisons took advantage of the powerplay with a cross-ice pass from Alana Serhan to Erica Rieder who put it in the back of the net which would lead them to their 5-0 victory, Keen getting a fourth assist on the play.
The Bisons take on the Calgary Dinos on Jan. 27 in Calgary with puck drop at 8 p.m. CT. Lethbridge will take on UBC on the same weekend.
