CALGARY – The Saddledome was rocking as the Mount Royal Cougars defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 3-1, in front of a raucous crowd on Thursday night. Nicolette Seper, Shawni Rodeback and Rachel Piitz scored for Mount Royal. Cheyann Newman scored the lone goal for the Dinos in the loss.
Both teams came out of the gate strong. Mount Royal's Emma Pincott and Calgary's Kelsey Roberts were both called upon early to make some big saves. Mount Royal would break through first on an early powerplay opportunity.
Nicolette Seper deflected the puck over Roberts' shoulder to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Shawni Rodeback then fired home a Kate Hufnagel pass and the Cougars would close out the first up 2-0 heading into the intermission.
The rivalry between the two sides was very prevalent in the second period. MRU had multiple chances on the powerplay but the best chance of the period belonged to Calgary's Kate Lumley. Lumley found herself on a breakaway halfway through second but was thwarted by Pincott. Pincott's stellar play gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead after two.
The Dinos struck early in the third as Lumley linked up with Cheyann Newman thirty seconds into the period. The Cougars would reply later on when Rachel Piitz tucked away her wraparound making it 3-1. That is how it would finish, as Mount Royal claimed their second victory on Saddledome ice in five seasons.
With the victory Mount Royal improves to 9-11-1-4, while Calgary falls to 2-19-1-3.
The all-Calgary battle will resume tomorrow night at Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:00pm MST.
