CALGARY- The Trinity Western Spartans (8-1) managed to take down the Mount Royal Cougars (4-5) on Friday evening on Kenyon Court (25-18, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17).
Sophie Carpentier and Elizabeth Wendel lead the Spartans with 19 kills each while setter Nikki Cornwall played a spectacular game, making 38 assists.
The Spartans appeared to be a well-composed team in the first set, controlling the tempo of the game and jumping out to a 13-9 lead, forcing the Cougars first timeout of the game.
Trinity Western continued their strong play out of the timeout. With a commanding lead, Ashtyn McKenzie rose above the net to deny a Cassidy Kitchen kill attempt, giving the Spartans a 25-18 first set win.
The beginning of the second set transpired much like the first, with Trinity Western gaining a small lead and maintaining it throughout the game. The Cougars made it interesting late in the game as Carly Davies made a nifty kill off an Amy Gordon setup, pulling within one down 17-16.
Not giving up against one of the top teams in the Canada West conference, the Cougars would take their first lead of the game just a few points later. Kylie Willis made an athletic block off a Sophie Carpenter kill attempt, putting the Cougars up 20-19.
After increasing their lead to 24-20, the Cougars allowed e Spartans four straight points with Nicki Cronwall serving, the last on yet another Sophie Carpentier kill that extended the set.
The Spartans would go on to win the next two points, the last due to an Amy Gordon ball handling error, giving the Spartans a 26-24 second set victory.
The Cougars played their best set of the game in the third, jumping out to a 19-16 lead.
Up 23-19, Alex Donaghy would make her ninth kill of the game, putting the Cougars one point away from winning the set. On the very next play the Spartans made an error, extending the match to a fourth set.
The fourth set began much like the first two, with the Spartans jumping out to a small lead before Mount Royal began a comeback. Eventually though, the Spartans were able to gain some breathing room up 18-14.
With the Spartans up 24-17, Alex Donaghy hit a kill attempt into the net, giving the Spartans their eighth win of the season.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow night, again on Kenyon Court. First serve is slated for 4 P.M.
