BRANDON – The #2 UBC Thunderbirds earned the weekend sweep in what was supposed to be a sweet send-off for graduating Bobcats. The T'Birds picked up a straight sets 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-13) win as the home crowd bid farewell to Brandon products Jodie Baker, Gillian Leech and Courtney Roberts in their final matches as Bobcats.
The Bobcats showed signs of life early in the first set, after a fitting send-off for fifth-year right-side/middle Baker, whose season came to a close earlier this year due to injury.
Baker started for the Bobcats before being subbed off before the first serve for Syndey Toninato, giving the Brandon-product an emotional farewell in her final match for her hometown team.
It seemed to spark the 'Cats, as they jumped to a first set lead and almost put it away, but the T-Birds fought off four set points before taking it 28-26.
Toninato got the second set started for the Bobcats with energy, putting up three aces in the first four points for an early 4-0 lead. UBC responded with a 6-1 run in the middle of the set before taking it 25-16.
The Thunderbirds started the third set on a 5-0 run before stifling the Bobcats with a .278 attack efficiency in the set.
The win improves UBC's record 20-4 as they conclude the regular season and get set to host a first round playoff series next weekend.
The Bobcats season is over with a record of 8-16.
Playing in what was her final regular season conference match, Juliana Kaufmanis led UBC with 10 kills, while Danielle Brisebois put up nine kills.
Brandon was led by Nikala Majewski's eight kills, while Toninato finished with four aces and Roberts had four blocks.
