Taylor Claggett helped the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team secure a Canada West playoff berth in thrilling fashion, authoring a pair of outstanding weekend performances.

On Friday, the third-year forward from Mission, B.C. had a tremendous all-around outing, racking up 16 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals, but the Cascades fell 79-74 in overtime to the Manitoba Bisons.

UFV required a victory in Saturday’s rematch with Manitoba, plus a Brandon win at Thompson Rivers, to punch their playoff ticket, and they took care of their half of the equation behind a monster game from Claggett. She racked up a season-high 27 points and 13 rebounds for her second straight double-double (and seventh of the season) and added four assists in the Cascades’ 80-56 blowout win. Claggett had a record-setting night at the free throw line, establishing a new Canada West mark for free throw attempts (19) and tying the record for makes (15).

Meanwhile in Kamloops, Brandon managed an 81-73 win over TRU to allow the Cascades (8-12) to lock up a playoff berth for the eighth straight season. UFV opens the playoffs this Friday, taking on the Victoria Vikes on the road (7 p.m., CanadaWest.tv). 

Claggett finished the season fifth in Canada West rebounding (9.7 per game) and 20th in scoring (13.8 points per game), while leading the conference in free throw attempts per game (7.3).

Game log: Friday, Jan. 12 – 17 points, and 16 rebounds in 59-53 W @ Thompson Rivers / Saturday, Jan. 13 – 17 points (8-of-8 from the field), and nine rebounds in 76-67 W @ Thompson Rivers. 

Taylor Claggett had an outstanding weekend to spark the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team to a pair of crucial road wins over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

The third-year forward from Mission, B.C. had a huge double-double on Friday (17 points, 16 rebounds) to lead the Cascades to a 59-53 victory. In Saturday’s rematch, she finished one rebound shy of another double-double, racking up 17 points and nine boards in an ultra-efficient shooting performance (8-of-8 from the field) as UFV prevailed 76-67. 

The victories breathed new life into the Cascades’ playoff hopes, boosting their record to 6-10 with four regular-season games left on their schedule. Claggett currently ranks seventh in the conference in rebounding (9.4 per game) and 22nd in scoring (13.2 ppg).

The Cascades are on a bye this coming weekend, before returning to action with road games Jan. 26-27 at the UNBC Timberwolves.
