EDMONTON – For the second consecutive season, Canada West soccer hits the turf in August, as the men’s schedule opens August 25.
The conference men’s and women’s soccer schedules were released Wednesday, with the men’s campaign opening a week before the women’s schedule, which begins Labour Day weekend.
On the men’s side, the defending conference and national champion Alberta Golden Bears open their title defence Saturday, August 26 on the road against the Mount Royal Cougars, while the reigning women’s conference champion UBC Thunderbirds return to the pitch Saturday, September 2 on Vancouver Island against the Victoria Vikes.
This season marks a new conference playoff format on the women’s side, as the CW Women’s Final Four returns after two years of a six-team format. Both the men’s and women’s conference champions will be crowned using the four-team format the first weekend of November. On the women’s side, the top seeded Prairie Division team is slated to host the tournament, while the men’s event heads west of the Rockies to the highest remaining Pacific seed.
The 2017 season concludes Sunday, November 12, when U SPORTS national champions will be crowned on Canada West soil. This season marks the first time since 2006, both the men’s and women’s national tournaments will be held by Canada West members, as Thompson Rivers University gets set to host the men’s event, and the University of Manitoba hosts the women’s tourney.
For TRU the tournament marks the second national event hosted by the school, which joined CW in 2005-06 and previously hosted men’s volleyball in 2010. Manitoba’s hosting will be one for the history books, as the women’s national championship heads to the Keystone Province for the first time.
Again this season, CW is set to offer an extensive soccer webcast package via Canada West TV – the conference’s official streaming platform. Over 150 conference soccer games were streamed in 2016, with that number scheduled to grow in the coming years.
A full list of package options will be available mid-August, when the conference unveils its new streaming platform, as part of the conference’s rebrand.
