LETHBRIDGE – Trailing by double digits near the midpoint of the third quarter, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team rallied to come from behind and open the new Canada West season with a 79-62 win over the MacEwan Griffins.

Trailing by 12 points with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter, the 'Horns went on a 23-2 run to close out the quarter to turn the deficit into a nine point lead with one quarter to play.

English transfer Elliot Sentance led the 'Horns with a game high 22 points, while Zac Overwater came off the bench to chip in with 15 points and Mike Pierzchala finished with a 13 points, eight rebound night. For the Griffins, only Thadius Galvez and Keith Gerdes were the only Griffins to hit for double digits with 15 and 12 points respectively.

On their home floor, the 'Horns jumped out to a early lead, only to see the Griffins reel them back in before the first quarter to end. The 'Horns held a 18-13 lead at the first break but neither team was very efficient at the offensive end.

The 'Horns were 7 for 20 from the field and missed all five attempts from beyond the arc, while the Griffins did hit two deep balls but were on 5 of 16 from the floor and the teams combined for 1o turnovers.

In the second, the 'Horns went ice cold and allowed the Griffins take their first lead of the game and headed into half time with a 31-28 in a low scoring opening half. In the second the 'Horns only hit four shots from the floor and finished the half only shooting 28%. MacEwan was slightly better, shooting at 33%, but got to the free throw line 10 times in the half.

Coming out of half time, it look like the Griffins were going to take control of the game, opening with 16-1 run and building a 12 point lead but a three from Overwater kick-started the 'Horns offense. From there it was all Pronghorns.

Following the big third quarter swing, the 'Horns put up another 24 points to cruise to the 17 point victory.

On the night, the 'Horns finished shooting 40% after going 19 for 37 in the second half and out rebounded the Griffins 50-39. The Griffins were 34.3% from the floor on the night and turned the ball over 19 times to the 'Horns 15.

The rematch goes tomorrow night at 7:00pm at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The game will also be streamed live on
