To get you set for the latest weekend of Canada West men's basketball action, here are some storylines from around the conference in the latest edition of Free Throws.

Manitoba looks to extend Canada West leading six-game win streak

Bisons Athletics

WINNIPEG - The Bison basketball teams play their first games at home of the second half of the 2016-17 Canada West conference regular season with a weekend series against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves on January 27-28 weekend at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus). On Friday, the women's game will be at 6 p.m. CT and the men's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT while on Saturday, women's start at 4 p.m. CT and men's at 6 p.m. CT. Tickets available at the door of IGAC.

The Bison men's basketball team (8-6) is on a six-game conference win streak (nine games including non-conference contests). Manitoba is now in seventh place in the Canada West conference standings as they welcome UNBC (4-10) to town. Manitoba did not play the Timberwolves last season and the only time they have meet in conference action was in their first season in 2012-13, when the Herd won 90-79 at UNBC (Jan. 19/13).

Pronghorns look to punch ticket to post-season versus Heat

Pronghorns Athletics

LETHBRIDGE – Coming off a road sweep of the Victoria Vikes last weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team looks to cement their place in the Canada West playoffs, hosting the UBCO Heat in their final home games of the regular season. The Pronghorns and Heat will hit the hardwood at the 1st Choice Savings Centre Friday night at 8:00pm and Saturday night at 7:00pm. Both games can also be viewed on

Sitting at 10-6, the Pronghorns need one win to clinch a playoff spot and last Friday night's win over the Vikes was the Pronghorns first in Victoria since February 24, 2001 when they won game two of the Canada West semifinal.

Bobcats up next for 'Birds at War Memorial Gym

Aaron Martin, UBC Sports Media

VANCOUVER - Riding all sorts of momentum into their back-to-back series with the Brandon Bobcats (7-9, 7-9) this weekend, the No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team (20-2, 13-1) will be looking to continue to justify that lofty placement.

The 'Birds and Bobcats are scheduled to do battle on Friday, January 27, and Saturday, January 28. Both games are set to tip off at 7:00 pm (PT) in War Memorial Gym.

Vikes looking to gain ground in games against the Spartans

Cameron Doherty, Vikes Communications

VICTORIA - Currently on the outside looking in at the Canada West playoff picture, the UVic Vikes men's basketball team will get the chance to climb the standings when they host the Trinity Western Spartans in the CARSA Performance Gym on January 27 and 28.
The Friday night game gets underway at 8 pm with the rematch scheduled for 7 pm the very next day.
"We don't really go into any of the weekends thinking too much past getting a result," said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. "It doesn't matter who we are playing or where we are at, we just have to focus on getting our best result."

Cascades, WolfPack jockeying for playoff position

Dan Kinvig, UFV Cascades Sports Information

ABBOTSFORD - If the Canada West playoffs started today, both the Cascades and and WolfPack would be among the 12 to qualify. Both teams still have work to do down the stretch, though, beginning with a head-to-head clash this weekend.

The Cascades have played their best basketball since Christmas, highlighted by a 73-71 road win last Friday over the Alberta Golden Bears, ranked No. 6 in the nation at the time. The WolfPack are playing their first road games of 2017, having split their past two weekends at home vs. Victoria and Winnipeg.
