To get you set for the latest weekend of Canada West men's basketball action, here are some storylines from around the conference in the latest edition of Free Throws.

Dinos, WolfPack set to meet in rematch of 2016 CW Final

Larry Read, TRU WolfPack Communications

KAMLOOPS - Lots of excitement this weekend at the Tournament Capital Centre for Canada West men’s basketball.   The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack are tangling with the University of Calgary Dinos on the Warner Rentals Court on Friday and Saturday (Feb 3-4).

The games will see a rematch of the 2016-17 Canada West final. That game, which was played in Calgary on March 12, 2015 saw the home town Dinos take the WolfPack 91-84. It was TRU’s first medal in Canada West basketball as both teams moved to the CIS Final 8.

Cascades, Vikes looking to boost their playoff prospects

Dan Kinvig, UFV Cascades Communications

ABBOTSFORD - The Cascades and Vikes come into the weekend with matching 7-9 records, which leaves them in a four-way tie with Mount Royal and Regina for ninth through 12th place. Only 12 teams make the Canada West playoffs, so they’re effectively on the bubble, albeit on the right side currently.

“We need to play with the same energy we’ve been playing with, but with a different understanding that we’ve got to protect the paint a little bit better,” Cascades head coach Adam Friesen said. “That was a takeaway from last weekend (as the Cascades split a pair of games vs. Thompson Rivers). Vic tries to grind it out, and games like that come down to a possession here or there. Whoever wins the battles in the paint gives themselves a better chance to win.”

Courtside game brings President and Timberwolves to War Memorial Gym

Aaron Martin, UBC Sports Media

VANCOUVER - With their offense hitting a new level over their recent seven-game win streak, the no. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team (20-2, 15-1) will put that to the test against the UNBC Timberwolves (4-12, 4-12) this weekend, as the Wolves make their first appearances in War Memorial Gym since the 2014-15 Canada West quarterfinals.

The 'Birds and Wolves will open their two-game series this Friday, February 3 with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The re-match between the two sides is set for 7:00 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, February 4.

MRU to host 2-14 Spartans at home

MRU Cougars Communications

CALGARY - The Cougars fell below .500 for the first time this season, losing to Saskatchewan twice this past weekend. The Cougars can get back to even with two victories over the 2-14 TWU Spartans. Two wins will almost certainly lock up a playoff spot for Mount Royal.
