REGINA - The University of Regina men's hockey team dropped an 8-2 decision at the hands of the Saskatchewan Huskies at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Ultimately, it was a 59-second span in the first period that sunk the Cougars, as Saskatchewan rattled off three goals in less than a minute. Andrew Johnson, Alex Forsberg and Levi Cable all found the net for the fastest three goals by one team in Canada West regular season history.
Wyatt Johnson and Kendall McFaull added to the lead in the second period, while Carson Stadnyk, Parker Thomas and Josh Roach sealed the deal in the third.
Logan McVeigh had three assists for the Huskies, while Connor Gay (2A), Roach (1G, 1A), Stadnyk (1G, 1A), Andrew Johnson (1G, 1A) and Wyatt Johnson (1G, 1A) also had multi-point nights.
Zak Zborosky scored his first U SPORTS goal on the powerplay at the start of the third, banging home a rebound in front off assists from Ian McNulty and Brody Luhning. Tyler King also scored a powerplay goal for the Cougars in the third, beating Jordon Cooke with a short-side shot from Luhning and Cody Fowlie.
Michael Herringer played well in his Cougar debut, seeing lots of action and making 37 saves. Cooke countered with 20 stops.
The Huskies were 0-4 on the powerplay while the Cougars went 2-4. Saskatchewan won the faceoff battle by a 41-31 margin.
The Cougars and Huskies will square off again on Saturday night, with 7 p.m. puck drop at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon.
