Wesmen sweep Huskies at PAC

SASKATOON – With a 72-63 win over the University of Saskatchewan Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep of the Huskies.

The win keeps the Wesmen perfect in the young Canada West women's basketball season at 4-0. Saskatchewan drops to 1-3 on the season. A night earlier, the Wesmen won 66-63. 

Saskatchewan had an early 5-2 lead, but the Wesmen quickly took over the first quarter and went on a 14-0 run to break open the game. Winnipeg led 18-13 after the first quarter.

The Huskies opened the second quarter with a Libby Epoch jump shot, but Winnipeg continued to answer Saskatchewan's offence.  Winnipeg led 37-31 at halftime. 

The Huskies opened the second half on a 6-1 run before Winnipeg hit a three point shot. Saskatchewan pulled within one after two Summer Masikewich free throws at 38-37. Megan Noonan hit a three-pointer for the Wesmen on the next trip up the court and Winnipeg continued to lead 51-47 at the end of the frame.

With just under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Megan Ahlstrom completed a three-point play to put the Huskies within three at 53-50. But after a stop at Winnipeg's end, the Huskies couldn't covert on two chances at the other end of the court.  The Wesmen continued to build on their lead.

Noonan led the Wesmen with 21 points and four rebounds on the night. Antoinette Miller added another 13 points and five rebounds, while Faith Hezekiah scored 14 for the Wesmen off the bench.

Ahlstrom led the Huskies with 16 points off the bench. Sabine Dukate added another 14 points and five rebounds. 

Saskatchewan finished the game shooting at 34.9%, while the Wesmen shot at 43.3%. The Huskies outrebounded Winnipeg 45-22. 

The Huskies remain at home to host the Brandon Bobcats next weekend, while the Wesmen return home to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
