SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies didn't lead until the second half, but fought to maintain it down the stretch run of a 68-64 win over the Brandon University Bobcats Friday night at the PAC.
The Huskies grabbed two straight rebounds on missed second foul shots to ice the game away in the closing seconds after the Bobcats pulled to within one.
Saskatchewan improves to 2-3 on the season after earning its first home win of the 2016-17 season. The Bobcats two-game winning streak comes to an end with the loss, dropping them to 2-3.
Brandon opened the game on a 7-0 run that was quickly answered by Saskatchewan. The Bobcats continued to take it to the green and white on their home floor and held the lead after the first quarter 17-12. In the second it was more of the same from the visitors. Forcing tough shots and capitalizing on turnovers, Brandon maintained the five-point advantage at half, leading 32-27.
Saskatchewan came out strong on the defensive end in the second half and took its first lead of the game with 5:33 to go in the third quarter. The game would go back and forth in the final quarter with neither team able to separate.
Sascha Licthenwald and Sabine Dukate each scored 18 points to lead the Huskies in the victory. Libby Epoch led the team with six rebounds to go along with seven points.
Keisha Cox was Brandon's leading scorer on the night. Cox scored 21 points and came up just a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Amy Williams and Lauren Anderson also grabbed nine rebounds in the game for the Bobcats.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at the PAC at 6:15 p.m. Following Saturday's game, the 2015-16 CIS champion Huskies will be honoured with a banner unveiling and presentation.
