CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos (5-2) marched onto Kenyon Court and dominated play on Thursday evening, beating their crosstown rival Mount Royal Cougars (2-5) 85-50.
Bobbi Jo Colburn lead the Dinos with 16 points, going 7-13 from the field, making 7/8 of her two point field goals. Erin McIntosh pitched in with four assists off the bench while Brianna Ghali was all over the court posting 11 points with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile Becky Nash registered a double-double for the Cougars, scoring 12 points to go along with 11 boards. Nonetheless, the contest was one the Cougars would like to quickly forget.
The Cougars failed to make a three-point field goal during the game, going 0-9 from beyond the arc with just a 25 per cent field goal percentage for the game.
The Dinos' full court press proved to be a factor in the first quarter, forcing 12 turnovers, a few being due to 10-second violations.
As a result the Cougars were unable to get into an offensive rhythm, going just 1/13 from the field in the first quarter as the Dinos' jumped ahead to a 14-3 lead.
Brianna Ghali proved to be a difference maker in the quarter, knocking down four of her shots and a couple free throws, leading her team with 10 points.
The Dinos started the second quarter on fire. Bobbi Jo Colburn consistently burned the Cougars, making most of her shots as the Dinos continued their tenacious defensive play, scoring 23 points off turnovers in the first half.
The Dinos forced the Cougars to the outside for the duration of the half, preventing Becky Nash from having her presence felt under the basket. The strong defensive play lead to a poor 4-22 shooting performance in the first half by the Cougars.
After twenty minutes the teams went into the locker rooms with the Dinos having a commanding 45-12 lead.
The Cougars' fought hard to get back into the game in the third quarter, more than doubling their first half point total. However, the Dinos continued their strong play, finishing the third quarter with a 63-29 lead.
While the Cougars' starters continued their strong effort into the fourth quarter, the Dinos never let off the gas pedal and cruised to an 85-48 win.
The two teams will be back at it on Saturday at 5 P.M at the University of Calgary
