Pronghorn Anderson named CIS athlete of the week

TORONTO – Hockey goaltender Alicia Anderson from the University of Lethbridge and cross country runner Yves Sikubwabo from Laval University are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending October 16, 2016.

Anderson, a second-year science student from Calgary, made a combined 117 saves in her season debut over the weekend at Regina, tying and then breaking the Canada West record for stops in a single game. The Pronghorns keeper turned aside 53 shots to equal the conference mark in a 3-2 win over the Cougars Friday night, before setting the new record with an astonishing 64 saves Saturday in a 3-2 overtime loss.    

Cross country runners Claire Sumner of Queen’s and Mélanie Myrand of McGill and soccer player Jessie Noseworthy of Memorial were also nominated for the women’s award. 

Sikubwabo, a first-year engineering physics major from Kicukiro, Rwanda, won the UNB Invitational race on Saturday, in the annual AUS-RSEQ interlock event. The Rouge et Or rookie crossed the finish line over 20 seconds ahead of teammate Igor Bougnot, claiming his second straight victory and third consecutive podium finish. 

Soccer player Niklas Bauer of Wilfrid Laurier, and hockey players Stephen Anderson of UNB and Steven Stanford of Calgary were the other male nominees.
