REGINA - Kylee Kupper had a goal and an assist as the University of Regina women's hockey team completed the sweep of Mount Royal University on Saturday afternoon, scoring a 3-2 comeback win at The Co-operators Centre.
Kupper, Jaycee Magwood and Elise Endicott scored for the Cougars. Kate Scidmore and Rachel Piitz replied for the visitors, as MRU drops to 0-3-1-0 on the season.
MRU scored first as Scidmore netted her first career U SPORTS goal following a mad scramble in front of the Cougar net. Morgan Baker was essentially discarded by an MRU forward and after what seemed like minutes the puck ended up in the net.
Magwood drew the Cougars even just 1:49 into the second period on a wicked wrist shot but Piitz put Mount Royal back up just 58 seconds later thanks to a nice backhand. MRU's momentum carried their lead late into the second but a long pass from Kaitlyn Crowe found Kupper (pictured) behind the MRU defence and the Cougar captain converted the breakaway.
The third period saw neither team able to gain any traction offensively, until Kupper went on a long rush near the midway point of the frame. Kupper's pass in front found Jenna Grube, whose shot was stopped but Endicott was in the right place to bat it home for her first of the season.
Endicott found herself in trouble with time ticking away in the third, taking an interference penalty almost directly followed by a slashing call. The second-year forward's four minutes of penalties gave MRU a great chance to even the score, but Baker and the Cougar penalty kill stood up to the MRU attack to seal the win.
Baker made 24 saves for her first win of the season, while Zoe De Beauville stopped 23 shots as MRU continues searching for its first regulation win.
The Cougars (3-1-0-0) will be on home ice again next weekend, for a bigtime matchup against the 3-1-0-0 UBC Thunderbirds. MRU will play a home-and-home with Lethbridge.
