VICTORIA- The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat on Sept. 22 by a score of 6-0 at Centennial Stadium. Second-year Vike Aishy Shinomura scored twice for her team in what was a strong offensive showing by Victoria.
"I thought Aishy really stepped up today," said Vikes head coach Tracy David, commenting on the play of Shinomura. "She was very composed under pressure, dribbled the ball well and made good passes to go along with the two goals she scored on her own."
With the loss, the UBC Okanagan Heat fell to an overall record of 2-3-1 in the Canada West Pacific division.
"It was a tough game for us tonight but sometimes that is the way a game can go," said Heat head coach Craig Smith. "We had a game plan coming in but UVic played us tight tonight and got us on the run."
The Vikes began the game on fire with great scoring chances coming from Rachel Baird and Shinomura but they could not manage to find the back of the net. Baird had Heat goalie Iona Larson beat but ran herself out of room leaving her with a tough angle to score. Shinomura got a shot off that hit the cross bar despite being surrounded by Heat defenders. UBC Okanagan goalkeeper Larson kept the Vikes at bay early stopping several difficult shots to keep her team in the game.
Baird however would redeem herself by scoring the games opening goal in the 36thminute. Baird found herself in open space and put her shot into the top left corner of the net to give her Vikes squad a 1-0 lead. In the dying moments of the opening half, a Georgia Bignold corner kick found its way into the back of the net to give Victoria a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Vikes kept the pressure on in the second half. Goals from Krya Teetzen, Natalie Cavallin and two from Shinomura would give Victoria the victory by a final score of 6-0.
The Vikes will head east for a game against MacEwan University on Sept. 28. UBC Okanagan will head home and host Fraser Valley next weekend on Sept. 29. All games can be watched live at canadawest.tv.
