UBC's Shanice Marcelle paces Canada to 7th in Pan Am Cup women's volleyball

LIMA, Peru – UBC Thunderbirds 2013 CIS BLG Award winner Shanice Marcelle led the way as Canada swept Peru 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 in the 7th-place match at the Pan American Cup women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday night.
 
The Canadians dominated 11-2 in the blocking category and 5-2 in service winners while scoring on 20 errors by the opponents while committing 15.
 
Shanice Marcelle, Lisa Barclay and Kyla Richey finished with 13, 12 and 10 points for the winning side while Jaimie Thibeault had 9, with three blocks included.
 
“It was a very strong tournament for us,” said Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig.  “The main thing was that we finished among the top seven. I am very glad with the performance of my team during the competition.”
 
 “It was a difficult game but we were motivated point by point and were convinced about winning,” added Canadian team captain Brittney Page.
 
The U.S., defeated the Dominican Republic 25-12, 25-20, 25-18 for the gold and Argentina bounced Brazil 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 for bronze.  In the fifth place match it was Puerto Rico over Cuba 24-26, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9.

IQUITOS, Peru – Lisa Barclay of the UBC Thunderbirds scored 18 points as Canada went the distance at the Pan Am Cup women’s volleyball tournament, pulling out a victory over Peru 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11.  On Monday, Canada lost in five sets to Cuba in its opening match.
 
Barclay had 15 kills, two blocks and an ace, Lucy Charuk added 14, Kyla Richey 12 and Jaimie Thibeault 10.  Led by Britney Page with five, Canada produced 18 points on the block compared to seven for Peru.
 
In the Group B standings, Canada and Peru both sport 1-1 records while Cuba (1-0) and Costa Rica (0-1) played later Tuesday.  The top-three advance to the playoffs.  Canada concludes its round robin Wednesday against Costa Rica.
 
In other early matches Tuesday, Argentina swept Trinidad and Tobago 25-23, 25-18, 25-11 and Dominican Republic beat Colombia 25-19, 25-14, 25-21.

IQUITOS, Peru – UBC Thunderbirds graduate Lisa Barclay led with 13 points as Canada lost in five sets to Cuba 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-13 to open the Pan American Cup women’s volleyball tournament on Monday night.

The Cubans prevailed despite committing 42 unforced errors compared to 25 by Canada. Both teams totaled 14 blocks and the Cubans had the edge 6-5 in aces.
 
Lisa Barclay led Canada with 13 points followed by Jaimie Thibeault and Kyla Richey with 12 points and Shanice Marcelle with 10.

The 13 countries at the tournament are also battling for six spots at next year’s FIVB Grand Prix.  Canada is in Group B with the Cubans, Peru and Costa Rica.

“This is a very important tournament for us because we are bringing a very young team and for many of the girls this is their first international event,” said Canada’s head coach arnd Ludwig. “We have prepared well and the last seven weeks were very intense. Our goal is to get back into the world’s top 15 and this Pan American Cup could be the first step in that direction.”

Canada faces Peru on Tuesday and Costa Rica on Wednesday.  The quarter-finals are Friday, the semis on Saturday and final on Sunday,
