CALGARY- The Dinos swept city rivals, the MRU Cougars Thursday, Nov. 24, in a dominate performance, never letting the Cougars surpass 19 points in a single set (25-16, 25-16, 25-19).
The win stretched the winning streak to six games, and places the Dinos second in the Canada West conference.
The Dinos controlled the game throughout the first set, after starting out on a five to one run, the Dinos never let the Cougars back within four points. Brianna Solberg put up her first of three aces on the night on the first serve of the match. Outside hitter for the Cougars Alex Donaghy tried to rally her team back, posting five kills and a block assist on the set, but the defence couldn't seem to stop Kate Pexman who hit for over 80%.
The Dinos showed their dominance in front of the net, putting up 3 blocks in just four rallies. The Cougars were persistent, and stayed close up until around the half way mark of the set, but the Dinos took control and went on a ten to four run, With Hannah Tanasichuk closing out the set with her second kill of the match.
The Cougars would fight hard in the final set to avoid the sweep, keeping the Dinos within 6 points throughout the set, and bringing the game to a tie mid way off of a seven to two run by the Cougars. The attack would eventually come to a halt at the hands of Pexman, who through down her ninth kill of the night to turn momentum around. Although the Cougars stayed close they could not regain the lead, Moffatt finished the set, and the match with a block assist as well as a kill in the final two rallies.
The Dinos improve to 6-1 on the season, and take the first of two matches this week against MRU, but the Cougars will look for redemption this Saturday, Nov. 26 at Kenyon Court.
