BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats knocked off the Regina Cougars in four sets on Thursday in a rare matinee Canada West women's volleyball match at the Healthy Living Centre.
The set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.
In the opening set, the Bobcats solid block defence rose to the occasion as the home side led 16-14. Regina had a late surge in the first and went up 21-18 following an 8-3 run. Brandon countered with a quick 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 23-22. The Cougars stood their ground and edged BU in the first.
The Bobcats turned the tables in the second set with an 8-2 run. At the technical timeout, BU's advantage was 16-12. Brandon's lead was trimmed to 18-16, before the Bobcats sealed it by taking seven of the next nine points.
In the third, a string of four straight points put BU ahead 19-14. The Cougars chalked up four consecutive points of their own to tie it 23-23. Brandon regained the momentum with Courtney Roberts finishing off the set with one of her match-high 19 kills.
Brandon continued to push the pace in the fourth as they strung together seven straight points to lead 19-15. The Cougars trimmed the deficit to 20-19, but a 5-1 Bobcats' run put the contest out of Regina's reach.
Roberts and Danielle Larocque were involved in six blocks each, while Gillian Leech led the contest with 17 digs for BU.
Nikala Majewski notched 16 kills as Brandon boosted their conference record to 3-and-10.
Regina had three players in double figures with Ashlee Sandiford scoring 11 kills, while Kathleen Bruce and Diana Lumbala added 11 kills as the Cougars slipped to 1-and-12.
The Bobcats will look to sweep the series with the rematch against Regina set for Friday night.
