SASKATOON – With a 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-20) win, the No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Pandas completed the weekend sweep over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Court at the PAC.
The win keeps the Pandas perfect on the women's volleyball season at 14-0. Saskatchewan drops to 5-9. A night earlier, Alberta won in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18).
Saskatchewan came out with a jump and held a six-point lead throughout the majority of the first set. Service runs by Mackenzie Pek and Taylor Annala helped lead the Huskies to the gap and the 25-17 win.
The experienced Pandas regrouped and turned the tables in the second game. Close throughout the first seven points, Alberta began to break away and was the first to 16, at 16-10. The Huskies couldn't recover from the gap, losing 25-17.
A Kacey Otto service run sealed the third set 25-13 victory. Down 17-13, Alberta scored eight straight points for the win. Otto tallied two aces in the run.
Alberta continued the point streak scoring the first five in the deciding set. Emily Humbert broke up the play, but the Pandas were returned the ball on a service error. Alberta scored another five straight points and the Huskies couldn't recover, losing 25-20.
Meg Casault led the Pandas to the victory with a match-high 18 kills. Karly Janssen added another eight, while Otto recorded seven kills and 15 digs.
Emmalyn Copping led the Huskies with 16 kills on the other side of the night. Humbert recorded another seven, while Marguerite Ferguson and Annala each had six. Jennifer Hueser had 11 digs.
The Huskies travel to meet the Winnipeg Wesmen next weekend, while the Pandas return home to host the Trinity Western Spartans.
