Women’s second star – Meagan Lemoine
MacEwan Griffins soccer
Game log: Friday, September 8 – goal and assist in 3-0 W vs. UBCO / Sunday, September 10 – a goal and two assists in 7-2 W vs. Thompson Rivers.
After recording points in four of the Griffins’ five preseason games, Lemoine picked right up where she left off in MacEwan’s home-opening weekend. Against UBC-Okanagan in the season-opener last Friday night, she set up the Griffins’ first goal when she clashed with a defender at the top of the box in the 22nd minute and the ball spun over to Brittany Costa for a perfect strike. In the 59th minute, she gave MacEwan a 2-0 lead when she beat the UBCO keeper to a loose ball and found the twine.
On Sunday against Thompson Rivers, Lemoine was even more dominant, taking seven of MacEwan’s 29 shots in the contest. She scored in the 14th minute when she was sprung by Meghan Oram, waited for the keeper to challenge and chipped it into the low left corner. She also recorded two assists, first setting up Kaylin Hermanutz for the game’s opening goal in the 8th minute. In the 36th minute, she then threw the ball from the sideline 30 yards into the box, where it bounced twice and onto the boot of Raeghan McCarthy, who scored from the far side.
The five-point weekend has Lemoine tied for the Canada West scoring lead.
Lemoine will lead MacEwan (2-0-0) into Friday’s home match against cross-town rival Alberta (1-0-1) in Edmonton where one team’s undefeated mark will fall.
