Seven Calgary Dinos selected in CFL Draft
Tuesday night's Canadian Football League Draft belonged to the Calgary Dinos, as the school led the way with seven players selected by CFL clubs - the most among Canadian Interuniversity Sport schools.
It didn't take long for the Dinos to make their presence felt in the draft, as offensive linemen Sukh Chungh went second overall to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, before fellow lineman Sean McEwen was selected third by the Toronto Argonauts.
Along with Chungh and McEwen, Calgary receiver Jake Harty also had his name called early in the evening, going 10th overall to the Ottawa Redblacks, as the Dinos continued their strong presence in recent years, with multiple players drafted for the third time in the last five years.
In total, 13 Canada West players were selected by CFL clubs - tied for the most picks with Ontario University Athletics. Over the last three years a total of 38 Canada West players have been selected in the CFL Draft.
Following Chungh and McEwen’s selections, the next Canada West player to come off the board was Manitoba Bisons receiver Nic Demski, who went sixth overall to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Demski, a four-time All-Canadian, joins the Roughriders after leading the country in 2014 in yards per catch, averaging 21.8 yards.
Much like the first round, the second round featured back-to-back Canada West players selected early, beginning with Harty, and next with Regina Rams receiver Addison Richards, who went 11th to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Richards becomes the Bombers' property after a tremendous 2014 season, in which he led CIS with 916 receiving yards.
Also selected in the second round from the conference was Alberta Golden Bear David Beard, who went 16th overall to the Edmonton Eskimos. The offensive lineman became the first Alberta player selected inside the top two rounds since punter Hugh O’Neill, who went 11th overall in 2011 to the BC Lions.
After Beard, seven more Canada West players were selected, as Tanner Doll (Calgary), Kienan Lafrance (Manitoba), Tyler Langlais (Calgary), Aaron Picton (Regina), and 2014 Hec Crighton winner Andrew Buckley (Calgary) were all selected in rounds three through seven.
