Cougars rally to advance in a thriller
Two late goals help MRU extinguish Heat 2-1
CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars made history on home turf Friday, rallying from a goal down to defeat the UBC Okanagan Heat 2–1 in a dramatic Canada West women’s soccer quarter-final at MRU Field #2.
It marked the Cougars’ first-ever home playoff win, achieved in fitting fashion with a late strike from Darian Pluhator in the 88th minute to complete the comeback.
UBCO struck first in the 25th minute when Annabelle Walker’s shot was stopped by Cougars goalkeeper Ella Filek, but the rebound fell to Abigail Taneda, who calmly tapped it in for a 1–0 lead.
It was a bit of history for Taneda and UBCO, and only fitting the program's all-time points leader would score the program's first ever Canada West playoff goal.
The Heat carried that advantage into halftime, with keeper Talia Gagnon turning aside several quality Mount Royal chances.
The Cougars controlled much of the second half, pressing for an equalizer and finally breaking through in the 76th minute. Star forward Tamara Djurisic curled a free kick into the top right corner to level the match and spark the home crowd.
With extra time looming, Mount Royal continued to push. A long shot from Pluhator found its way past Gagnon in the 88th minute, sealing a thrilling 2–1 victory and sending the Cougars to the semifinals in British Columbia, where they’ll face either Saskatchewan or UBC.
Team captain Isabella Chirico said the Cougars’ familiarity with Calgary’s natural grass surface gave them an edge.
“We kind of know Calgary weather a little better than Kelowna weather,” Chirico said. “I told the team before the game—one word: history. We’re making history today.”
Mount Royal’s late surge ensured they did just that, keeping their championship hopes alive in dramatic fashion.
